Types of cricket tournament format

One day test and T20 are 3 types of cricket tournament formats. Number of players in cricket, playing days and cricket history are discussed today.

As per the ICC rules there are total 3 types of cricket formats: Test cricket, odi cricket and t20 cricket. All formats are different from each other. The number of cricket players are the same, number of balls thrown in one over is also the same but the number of total overs are different in all types of cricket.

Types of cricket tournament format

Test cricket, one day international (odi) and T20 are three different types of cricket tournament formats. Let’s explore all of them one by one.

Test cricket

Cricket started with test matches later one day cricket and the last T20 cricket was introduced.

As per the ICC rules test cricket is played for 5 days and also known as 5 day cricket. Test cricket is the first types of cricket tournament format.

The match is played among teams containing 11-11 players each. Some players are reserved and are called when any player from playing 11 gets injured.

As per the cricket rules cricket grounds measurements are not the same for every ground they may be different. In today’s modern cricket test match cricket world cup is also conducted and in the first test match world cup England defeated India and became the first test world cup winner.

The test match is played for 5 days that has 2 innings for both teams. Both innings need to be finished in 5 days. In this cricket format bowling and batting are done 2 times by each team. As per the cricket history more test matches often finish in 3 to 4 days according to the pitch. Some test matches take 5 days to get finished.

There are a total 450 overs thrown in the 5 days test match. There are 90 overs thrown in one day of test cricket and every over contains 6 balls. Like this total 3240 balls are thrown in 1 test match in 450 overs.

How many balls are thrown in test match cricket.

The calculation for how many balls in 1 over and 1 match is given below.

  • Number of balls in 1 over = 6 balls.
  • Number of overs in 1 day of test cricket = 90 overs.
  • Total balls thrown in 1 day of test cricket = 6 balls x 90 overs = 540 balls are thrown.
  • Total balls thrown In 5 days of test cricket = 5 days x 90 overs = 3240 balls are thrown.

Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar has scored most runs in test matches and odi matches.

Cricket history

Cricket is a very old game that began in 1709. The first cricket match was among Kent teams, England and London cricket teams in 1709.

ODI cricket

ODI or one day international cricket finishes in 1 day. The match is played between two teams and each team contains 11 players. There are 50-50 overs for both teams and the total overs are 100 that should be delivered in the given time.

50 overs are thrown by one team and 50 overs are thrown by another team like this total 100 overs are there. The match finishes according to the situations mostly before 100 overs.

Unlike test matches there is only one innings for both teams meaning one team can bat one time and bowl one time. Whereas in test matches both teams have to bat two times and bowl two times.

Similar to other cricket formats, a total 6 balls are thrown in 1 over of an ODI cricket match. The total balls thrown in 100 overs are 6 balls x 100 overs = 600 balls. A total of 600 balls are thrown in 1 one day match.

T20 cricket

It is the shortest cricket format played for 40 overs only. There are 11 players in each team and 6 balls are thrown in every over. Each team gets 20 overs to bowl and 20 overs to bat like this total 40 overs are delivered. Total 240 balls are thrown in 1 t20 cricket match.

T20 cricket finishes in only one day in some hours. Unlike test matches, t20 match results come on the same day. Whereas test match results come later after 3, 4 or on the 5th day. First ICC T20 world cup was played in 2007 and the 1st t20 match was played between Australia and New Zealand in 2007.
